Harmful Effects of Chemical Abortions

During a chemical abortion a women usually takes two pills; mifepristone and mistoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the uterus from getting progesterone and as a result the lining of the uterus deteriorates and cannot transfer nutrients to the unborn child causing death. The use of this pill is a controversial topic for many reasons including its approval process, inadequate oversight of adverse effects as a result of its use and the simple fact that it is a medication to terminate pregnancy. This drug is being considered to be available over the counter which could lead to dangerous ramifications for women ingesting the pill but also the environment.

The abortion pill can have serious and even fatal side effects on women including sepsis, ruptured ectopic pregnancy, fever, pelvic inflammatory disease, cramping and nausea. Not only is this pill harmful for women taking it but it is harming our animals and planet as well. The usage of this medication results in contaminated medical waste and it needs to be treated as such. And at this time mifepristone and fetal remains are in wastewater causing sterilization of animals, plants and making their way back to humans through water intake and fertilizer.

Vendors of abortion drugs should be required to provide proper waste-management materials to abortion pill users to prevent these chemicals from affecting animals and water systems. When a woman says “my body, my choice” and uses the abortion pill to terminate her pregnancy, the impact can extend beyond her own body in ways she may not realize.

There is now a citizen petition to the FDA calling for these drugs to be stopped from harming people, animals, and the environment. If this concerns you, please use the attached link to sign the petition.
